Cyprus - Adult Education Centres of the Ministry of Education and Culture

The general aim of the Educational Centres is the overall development of the personality of every individual and the social, financial and cultural progress o the citizens and society in general.

The aims of the Educational Centres are similar with the developmental policies of the State, as well as with the broader targets of the Ministry of Education and Culture for the provision of "Life-long Learning" opportunities, to all the citizens of Cyprus, and the minimization of educational inequalities for their more effective accession and participation in the European Union.

The Educational Centres were first set up in 1960 after the declaration of independence of the Republic of Cyprus, mostly in rural areas. In 1974 they were expanded to urban areas, and today they operate at every corner of the free areas of Cyprus, offering educational opportunities to thousands of people who are over 15 years of age. Around 70 different subjects are on offer every year. These programs have been established in the minds of people as successful, and this explains the large number of participants, a total of over 20,000 participants yearly.

Moreover, the educational Centres organize, each year, free of charge, specialized groups for people with special needs learning or physical disabilities, the enclared, prisoners, the illiterate etc. Free Greek language lessons are also offered for repatriates, asylum seekers and foreign nationals who live and work in Cyprus.

Teaching staff

More than 500 qualified individuals are employed by the Educational Centres in order to cover the needs of the various subjects on offer.

Courses offered

The application of an educational program aimed for adults, should be clearly based on sound ground with complete, elaborate and flexible teaching methods and techniques. This constitutes an essential ingredient of a successful system.

Through the subjects on offer by the Educational Centres, sectors relating to Computer Literacy, instruction of foreign languages and others, are covered.

Computers (Information Technology)

Nowadays, with the continuous evolution of Technology, contemporary, new knowledge, skills and capabilities are necessary, if an individual is to be competitive to the demands of our era and correspondingly to the employment market. This requirement, is catered for through the instruction of computers as a separate learning field. The purposes are to promote computer literacy by acquiring pre-vocational skills and knowledge of Information Technology. The learners are taught: Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, Outlook, Access, Visual Basic, Publisher, e.t.c.

Foreign Languages

One of the basic requirements nowadays is the knowledge of foreign languages. This need is satisfied through the teaching and learning processes of foreign languages. Effective and correct communication among people is unquestionably a vital prerequisite for success in both the political and economic sectors, as well as to social and cultural activities. Moreover, the European Union, recognizing these needs, has set and imposed the learning of, at least, two foreign languages within the educational system of each member-state. The foreign languages which are taught are: English, French, German (Deutch), Greek, Arabic, Bulgarian, Spanish, Italian, Romanian, Russian and Turkish.

Courses on Cultural Issues

This enity covers a broad scope of subjects ranging from artistic and spiritual, to subjects of an aesthetic nature, which contribute in a multiplicity of ways in the improvement of the citizen`s quality of life. They, further, reinforce the national identity of the cititizens and promote the cultural heritage of Cyprus.

The cultural courses which are offered, include icon painting, Evaluation of artifacts, Glass-painting (Vitro), Byzantine music (chanting), the subject "Meet Cyprus", Gorfic Arts, Interior Design, Flower Arrangement, Painting, Theatre, Pupeteering, Porcelain Dolls making, Pottery, Framing, folklore, Literature, Cypriot Literature, Philotely (stamp-collection), Photography, Children`s literature, music, caricature, sketching, engraving, handmade creations such as Glass-painting, mosaics, jewellery. A wide range of dances are also taught: Greek, popular, traditional, Cypriot dances, modern dances, Latin-American, as well as dances from Pontos.

Health Issues

This unity aims at developing cultivating and offering basic knowledge and skills in relation to the prevention and treatment of physical conditions and mental health. Included in this field of "Health Issues" are: beauty and well-being treatments, Physical Education, Cooking, Confectionery, Baking, Healthy Notrition, psychology, Mental Health and others.

Practical Application subjects

The subjects of a practical nature include: Electrical Domestic Appliances, Electrical engineering, gardening, automobile mechanical engineering, construction, Plumbing, wood-carving and Carpentry.

Acquisition of vocational Skills

The above entity aims at developing basic knowledge and skills which are useful and beneficial for all professionals by improving their effectiveness at the work place and making them more competitive in the employment market. Subjects include: Librarianship, Silver-works, typing, Journalism, Public Relations and others.

General Subjects

These include: Educational Technology, European Studies, Sign-language, Law, Judicial, Braille system of writing and television.

Certification

For all the subjects on offer by the Educational Centres "Certificates of attendance" are awarded to each successful participation. The participants can willingly take any exams they wish.

The courses offered by the Educational Centres start at the end of October and finish by the end of May, of every academic (school) year.
